Pappy Van Winkles 13 Year Old is made from a 50/50 combination of Medley and Cream of Kentucky rye varieties sourced respectively from the long-time-closed Owensboro distillery and the Old Bernheim distillery in Louisville, the Old Rip Van Winkle Pappy Van Winkles 13 Year Old Family Reserve Straight Rye is one of the most complex and intricately crafted bourbons on the market. Matured in stainless steel tanks for 13 years, what emerges is a bourbon characterized by deep smoothness and full flavors. Heavier than the standard Van Winkle bourbon, the Family Reserve Straight Rye has a strong nose of wood, citrus, and cherry, while the palate boasts dark brown sugar, orange, and vanilla overtones – a surefire hit for any real fan of bourbon.

This 13-year breaks the mold as it is one of the oldest rye whiskeys available today. The maturity it has achieved while aging is quite obvious when you take the first sip. The original Family Reserve Rye was presumed to have been distilled at Medley in Owensboro, and acquired by Julian III through his connection to Stitzel-Weller, as United Distillers closed it down in the same year. The whiskey is also thought to have had the 1980s-distilled “Cream of Kentucky” rye from George T. Stagg blended though it prior to being tanked in 2004. The rye was the last of the remaining reserves that Julian Van Winkle III warehoused at Buffalo Trace by the time it finally ran out in 2016. A new batch distilled at Buffalo Trace was first bottled in 2018.
