All Blanton’s bourbons are Single Barrel and when introduced in 1984 the brand was the first single barrel bourbon to be sold commercially. See our blog post about the definition of Single Barrel. Although Blanton’s does not carry an age statement, barrels are dumped and bottled at between 6 and 8 years old ‘when they are just right’.
Constructed in 1935 shortly after the end of prohibition, and housing approximately 15,000 barrels, Warehouse H has some very specific qualities. The four story wooden frame is clad with corrugated metal as opposed to brick allowing larger internal temperature swings as metal has less thermal lag than with brick. The result on the whisky inside the barrel is there is greater fluid transfer between the whiskey and the barrel during the normal daily and seasonal heat cycles.
In the winter of 1881, Albert Bacon Blanton was born into one of the first families of bourbon history. At the age of sixteen, he started work in the Distillery as an office boy and fast became a leading pioneer in the development of bourbon. From the time he was made company president in 1921 until his retirement in 1952, his Distillery expanded from 44 to 144 buildings to become the largest Distillery of its day. During that period Colonel Blanton created his very special and limited supply of bourbon – his private reserve – handpicked and stored in what now is known as the famous Warehouse H.
